Why so many breaks?

Yoshihiro Togashi writes and draws the manga with very few assistants, if any. His health problems are well known: in July 2022 he explained that back and hip pain had kept him from sitting for two years. In October 2026 he announced that he would now turn down work with deadlines, for reasons of physical and mental health.

The pages keep progressing despite the breaks. According to Anime Explained, which relays the author’s production updates, chapter 427 was sent to the magazine on September 1, 2026 and chapters 428 to 430 are in their final stages. No publication schedule comes with this information.

Volumes in Japan and France

Volume	Chapters	Japan	France (Kana)

39	401 to 410	July 3, 2026	December 4, 2026 (announced date)

About 22 months passed between volumes 38 and 39 in Japan. Chapters 411 to 420, published in 2026, do not have a volume yet: as far as we know, no date has been announced for volume 40.

What about the anime?

There are two anime series: the 1999 one (62 episodes, Nippon Animation, aired from October 16, 1999 to March 31, 2001) and the 2011 one (148 episodes, Madhouse, from October 2, 2011 to September 23, 2014). As far as we know, no new season has been officially announced as of October 22, 2026: what circulates about an anime comeback remains rumor.
