Gabriel Moses, a self-taught British-Nigerian photographer and filmmaker, is once again making headlines with a promising collaboration with Avant Arte. Two new limited-time prints from his Regina series will be available to collectors around the world.
Gabriel Moses, originally from South London, quickly captured the attention of the art world with his powerful and moving portraits, primarily of black subjects, exploring themes of memory and identity. Although Moses was self-taught, he rose through the ranks of editorial and fine art, becoming a leading figure. His first recognition came from his documentation of his friends playing soccer, a series that opened the doors to many prestigious collaborations, such as Places+Faces, BYREDO, and Aimé Leon Dore.
Moses' new series of prints, "Lea" and "Monica," is a moving dedication to the women who have shaped and continue to shape the world. As a child, Moses was deeply influenced by his mother, grandmother and sister. These female figures not only shaped his artistic vision but also introduced Moses to fashion editorials, laying the foundation for his distinctive style.
“Lea”: An ode to motherhood
The print “Lea,” featuring model Judith Onah, shows a pregnant woman in a transparent white dress, a rifle resting on her shoulder. This powerful image symbolizes protection and maternal strength. Moses explains: “My mother always considered herself a protector. That's all I've ever known, being surrounded by someone who raised me but also protected me from many things. I wanted to express that through my photos – what motherhood means to me, and what it means to others. It's not just my story, it's a universal story. »
“Monica”: Strength and Independence
“Monica,” starring model Adit Ajhok Deng, presents a different side of femininity. With his back turned to the camera, Deng's silhouette blends into a dark red and black background. This mysterious composition evokes both strength and independence, showing a woman who stands resolutely in her own presence.
The "Lea" and "Monica" prints will be available for sale for 24 hours, starting July 9 at 9 a.m. ET. Each of the Type C prints, measuring 12 x 15.7 inches (unframed) on Fuji Gloss 246gsm paper, will retail for $383. Each piece will be signed and numbered on the back by the artist, adding a touch of authenticity and value for collectors.
